Meet Ako

Story submitted by: Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board

Workforce Challenge

Ako became unemployed in December 2009 when her company relocated. She started looking for jobs as a marketing coordinator and posted her résumé on the CareerBuilder website. For almost 7 months Ako received no response to her résumé. She wasn't sure if she was eligible to extend her unemployment benefits and she was beginning to be very worried about her future.

Workforce Solution

Ako enrolled at the Southeast Los Angeles County WIB in Cerritos and started taking job search workshops, which helped her learn how to revise her resume and communicate her skills in a way that would get better results. She also attended Steps to Economic and Personal Success (STEPS) workshops and job club during that time. "All the helpful tips, support, and friendship I received at SELACO WIB kept me positive and gave me no chance to have anxiety," said Ako.

Ako posted her new customized résumé to the CareerBuilder website and was contacted by a recruiter after only two days. "This company has been trying to fill the position since May, but because of the way I presented myself in the earlier résumé, they could not find me," said Ako. "How interesting! I now have much more confidence in selling myself... because of your workshops!"

Outcomes & Benefits

Ako had a series of interviews spanning from July to August and was offered the position as a bilingual Marketing Coordinator with an international manufacturer of automation products. "I am happily working with the company because of all your help!" she said. Congratulations, Ako!
