Meet David

Story submitted by: Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board

Workforce Challenge

In October, 2009, David was laid off after working for thirteen years in the electronics industry. He was unprepared to search for a new job, having no professional resume or cover letter.

Workforce Solution

David visited the Southeast Los Angeles County WIB (SELACO WIB) for assistance. There, he attended classes to learn computer skills, improve his typing, and develop a resume and cover letter that would effectively communicate his experience. He learned how to upload a cover letter and resume to the internet in order to apply for jobs online. Additionally, David qualified for WIA tuition assistance to return to school. After years in the electronics industry, he wanted to stay in a similar field, so he researched available options and decided to obtain certification as a biomedical technician.

Outcomes & Benefits

David entered and completed a 7 month course and earned a certificate as a biomedical technician. "Upon my completing the course, I started volunteering at a hospital, where my experience and knowledge increased, helping me to get my current job as a biomedical technician at a local hospital," shared David. "I want to thank my counselor Jodie, and all the other members of the Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board in Cerritos."
